SECURE AMERICA’S FUTURE ECONOMY
August 22, 2020
The Honorable Kevin McCarthy
2468 Rayburn House Office Building
Washington, DC 20515
Dear Representative McCarthy:
By way of introduction, Secure America’s Future Economy is an independent, all-volunteer group, centered in Delaware, which has been advocating smaller, more focused, less costly government since 1996. SAFE focuses on policy issues in an objective way and does its own homework.
In recent years, we have been struck by the increasingly toxic political conversation in DC and the deteriorating level of government performance. Consider the comments of top notch players like two-time Attorney General William Barr or former Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta about how the two sides used to work constructively between elections but now it’s politics all the time. Something is seriously amiss, they seem to be saying, but we’re not sure what the problem is or how it could be fixed.
Will the results of the November elections bring relief. The Democrats’ policy agenda is fundamentally inconsistent with our ideas, so we naturally favor President Trump’s reelection – and perhaps that will come to pass. Many observers seem to think Democrats will hold the House, however, and possibly capture the Senate as well. Ergo, partisan gridlock may well stay the same or get worse. Sorry to sound so gloomy, but that’s how we view the situation
A possible solution would be for House Republicans (and candidates) to take a cue from the Newt Gingrich playbook and pledge to support a Contract with America 2.0 agenda if a Republican majority in the House was elected. And we have taken the liberty of drafting just such a document, which is enclosed for your consideration. It’s also posted on the SAFE website, together with a list of supporting references for the proposed 15 bills. See s-a-f-e.org, Blog, 8/22/20.
We would love to hear from you or others about this proposal, and a card is enclosed with contact information. Onward and upward!
Copies of this correspondence were sent to President Donald Trump and Senator Mitch McConnell.
